We were able to get into a bigger place for our family. The first time we tried to sell it was on the market for over a year. This time we got and offer in 6 days. We sold it with a turd in the toilet that wasn't flushed, compliments of our 3 year old. So this time it must have been meant to be, six days on the market and then an offer with the toilet seat up and a turd in the toilet. The other funny thing was that our new neighbor with the noisy diesel truck that he would let idle in his driveway and wake us up in the morning or at night, had been gone for four months working in Texas. The day we moved out he returned, just in time for the new neighbors.

Needless to say, we feel very blessed. 4 member's of the Elders Quorum in my church, and two of my brothers showed up to help us move all the big and heavy stuff to our new home. My brother who works for a flour mill even let us use the mills big truck. Thanks to all those guys and anyone else that helped us get here. We now feel like we have room to grow, and I will finally be able to build that beauty salon for Tyra. As for now, here is a glimps at the new space for my Recording studio/Music room.

Chicken Pickin.......

So this is what playing in a country band for a year did to me. Apparently he is from Utah or at least spent some of his youth here before moving to Vegas. He is also Mormon. Why do I care? I haven't been a huge Killers fan but I like some of their stuff, so I guess I didn't pay much attention until now.

A couple of years ago I found some old friends from my mission that I severed for the Church Of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints(The Mormon Church). I found them on facebook and then proceeded to check out their profiles and found out that some of their children had grown up to be quite the musicians. So last year I offered to record some music for them in my home studio when they came out to Utah, and I spent a few days with them recording some of their demos. A very talented family. At the time their group was called "Bynow" and consisted of three siblings Rachel, Adam and Sarah Kaiser, but they have since changed their name to "The Neighbors". Sarah got married and moved away and Adam and Rachel are still out Rocking with their piano based rock as "The Neighbors".

So what does this have to do with Brandon Flowers, well not a whole lot, I don't know him but I know Rachel, and apparently Rachel has been on tour with him singing back ups and playing a little bit of keyboard for his solo album. Go Rachel! I think this is very cool and am glad to see Adam and Rachel out their following there dreams. And, imagine my surprise when I saw Rachel on Jay Leno last night singing with Brandon Flowers. She is the beautiful blond back up singer in this video, and will also be performing on Jimmy Kimmel tomorrow night.

You can check out the Neighbors right here in this next video. It will only be a matter time until you see them performing their own music on Jay Leno. I entered a contest on youtube for shredders. If you do not know what the definition of shredding is on guitar. Shredding= playing so many notes so fast that there's no room for any feeling to sneak in? Because, gee whiz, who has time for any of that pesky emotional stuff?
Whoever plays the fastest can get to the end of the song quickest!

Anyway, my take on it was to take a more blues feel in sound and feel. I am sure some kid who has time to play all day will win.

Disclaimer I make some weird faces when I played this and don't realize until I go back and check it out. While I fell in love with the Mesa Boogie stuff, it was just more economical to go with a Fender Hot Rod Deville. The clean is so nice and all my pedals sound great through it. Anyway, here is a demo of the new amp, with a pedal and some delay on a Satriani tune. I also figured out the whole HD thing on youtube, it takes longer to make a video, but the quality is much better.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this tune, it has been a favorite of mine since I first started playing guitar.

SRV and Pride And Joy........

I got bored one night, put the mics up in the studio and busted out some blues. This is my live version of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Pride and Joy. SRV is probably one of the most influential guitarist in the last 30 years. While all the hairbands were shredding he was laying down some groovy rootsy blues and playing clubs and venues all over the world.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say:
Stevie Ray Vaughan (born Stephen Ray Vaughan; October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is often considered to be one of the most important electric guitarists in the history of rock music by other musicians and commentators. Six albums of Vaughan's work have been released.[1] In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,[2] and Classic Rock Magazine ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential blues guitarists in history.

Anyway here's my small atempt at playing one of his most popular tunes.

Feels Like Christmas

Me having some fun with the green screen and my Christmas tune.

Austin Weyand in the studio Jam Session then Interview.

So Austin is a finger style guitarist that does not live to far from me, and he has been doing some video work in the studio, but one day we had a little jam and caught some of it on video. I am not sure if I am ready for the winter to hit, it seems to bring me down a little.

Poor little Misha busted her teeth all up in an accident but is doing better, Greyson is walking and Saige is getting cuter everyday. Not looking forward to the teenage years.

I should say I am lucky enough to keep just the right busyness lately. My day job, my music job, and my family life are all very well balanced at this point, at least to me. I don't think I could do more. Playing weddings, bars, parties, teaching guitar one or two nights a week, and getting to record some talented musicians is a great side job. Added to my 40 hour a week day job, it can be a little much some weeks though. It is a blessing and it is also nice to have a weekend off from the craziness, but I guess I am lucky to have it seeing as I live in northern Utah.

Right now I am just waiting on something to change. I have had my house up for sale for almost a year now, with no luck. This housing market thing is a mess and now with all the ATK layoffs in Box Elder county who knows if we will ever sell it. At least it is giving me an opportunity to save some money, while we wait for the right buyer to come along.

Time has sped up for me, must come with getting older or being busy. Anyway, boring post, not that anyone reads this blog anyway.

Lame Country Vid

Submited this to some contest on CMT. But I think it is a constant quest.

I was playing around with this little track the other night. It's a slow bluesy track that is in C and A minor. It's a very fun key signature to play in. You can still hear my faster shred/jazzy fusion side of my playing, but I like how this track lets you do that while still maintaining the blues roots in the music. There is a lot of talk about only using tube amps these days to get good sounds. But this is a hybrid amp that I used, it uses solid state technology and tubes to produce the tone or sounds. I think it sounds pretty good and it feels pretty close to how a tube amp would feel. Plus it uses 12" Celestion speakers to get the real speaker sound I am after and I think it helps. For you non guitarists. Celestion speakers are the kind used in the most popular amps for the last few decades. Marshall, Fender, Vox, Mesa Bogie.

The amp I am playing though is called a Vox. The Beatles used to use this brand of amp. So I think Vox has a good track record.

I am still trying to figure out what makes good tone. I thinks it is when the high notes don't hurt your ears and the low notes are not to muffled. The tone has a rounded smooth sound to it even when you kick up the gain and play more aggressively.

Ok, I've nerded out long enough. There are so many of us our there now with our own influences and music. In the last few years, I have gone back a bit to my roots as a player. Mostly out of necessity as my cover band played more places that excepted the blues etc.

I learned to play the guitar during the hair band days, so there is still this element of that I can still hear in may playing, and I don't mind it. Those were great and still are great players. They just got a bad rap because of the hair make up and the endless songs about partying. The blues though, the blues! Why such a passion for this style. For me it is a feeling, a freedom to put feeling into the music. That is what blues is about. Not only a quest to find the right sound but the right feeling in the song. When it is done right for me it is like wow. That is why Stevie Ray Vaughn was so popular with guitarists. Was he the best blues player? I don't know, but I do know this. He put heart and feeling into playing the guitar, and I think that is what matters with any style you play, any instrument you play. You put your heart into it and people are going to get it, relate to it and feel it.

Anyway, here is a tune by a guitarist named Robben Ford. This is my attempt at trying to play with less effect and a little more feeling. I am glad I found this minus track because it is very fun to play over. Enjoy. You non guitarist might like this also, especially the dorky guitar faces I pull during it.

Two new songs added.

If you all check out my music player over to the right, you'll notice two new songs. I never thought it would turn into a little project studio where I would be recording other musicians, but I have been busy with a lot of projects other than my own. Over the years I have produced about 10 CD's for other musicians, done some commercial work and have had a lot of fun. Through all this I have had to learn to how produce music, learn to arrange music, learn about song structure and song writing, learn about new technologies, learn to play bass and a little keyboard. I like technology and what it can do, but for the most part I just love playing music and recording it.

Every now and then the kids will come in and act interested in what I am doing. I have recorded a couple of songs with my daughter, but it will be interesting to see if it will be something she will have a passion for as she gets older.

Here is a little promo video I made one night when I was bored.

New Guitar

This is me testing out my Fender Stratocaster through my new VOX amp. Over the weekend Me, Afu and Reed played for a benefit that some bikers were putting on. Every year they get together and ride their Harley's and raise money for children that were abused by their parents or gaudian, and who's parents are now in the prison system. There were prayers said and you could feel a lot of love in the room. This year it was cold and they had been riding in the rain so they moved it inside to one of the pavilions at the Cache County Fairgrounds. The foundation is called BACA. Bikers against child abuse, and this event was called The Children's Justice Center's Teddy Bear Run.
http://www.bacausa.com/Internet/GuestBook.aspx
These stuffed animals go to the children. I was talking to one of the guys in charge and he says that when a young child is taken into foster care or taken away from there parents or guardian, the first thing they do is to take the children into a room that is filled to the brim with stuffed animals, and they get to choose one. I thought this was pretty cool. He said that it is so neat to see these children's faces light up when they see all these stuffed animals and get to choose one.
All these bikers looked tough, but they had hearts of gold.

By contrast, that same night we packet up all our equipment and played a wedding up at Deer Valley for a girl who was or used to be on the US ski team. Although not a real rock album, Rich has a rockers voice and as far as I’m concerned everything he does is first class. Farm Boy has long been a favorite of KZION listeners. Anyone who takes the time to listen to the lyrics of Farm Boy will be a Rich Bischoff fan. Mission Stories also has some real fun songs like I’ll Let You Drive and Green Apples. I never get tired of listening to Mission Stories."

"I Still Think About You" The Video

"Then I Cry"

Roger from my band wrote and sang this tune.
